Coaching Success Stories

Ever wondered how coaching really works and how it changes lives?

The below success stories are some of the real transformations I have experienced with my clients.

(Disclaimer: Names, titles, roles and organisation descriptions changed for privacy and confidentiality purpose)

Situation 1

Mangesh is a high-flyer with 15 years of corporate experience behind him and a fast-track career ahead of him. He was recently promoted to a critical leadership role in MNC with people management responsibility. Being a thorough expert in his area of Functional expertise, Mangesh was obviously considered the most suitable candidate for the position. However, Mangesh had always played the role of an Individual Contributor in his prior assignments, and hence this was a big step up for him.

As is true for most leadership promotions, Mangesh still had some rough edges which needed to be smoothened. A few months into the role, Mangesh realised that he needed some assistance since his EQ (Emotional intelligence Quotient) and reactive behaviour were hindering his work, especially while handling his team and engaging with critical stakeholders. Mangesh also needed to understand how we could mature into a more influential leader, which entailed a high degree of self-leadership i.e. empowering himself before uplifting others.

Approach

The below approach was deployed to help Mangesh become the leader he truly wanted to be:

Build - Through rigorous brainstorming, Mangesh could finally define the desired end state and pinpoint the must-have leadership competencies and attributes he wanted to embody as the leader. Getting absolute clarity on the new leadership persona made the end goal more attainable.

Assess- The emotional triggers, self-limiting beliefs, deep-rooted assumptions and behavioural patterns impacting Mangesh's leadership style surfaced through deep inner work. By questioning and challenging the many disempowering beliefs he had held this long, he could uproot the ones that were not serving him and replace them with more empowering beliefs that would enhance his leadership impact.

Explore - By understanding the numerous facets of his leadership style,  Mangesh could spot the vital leadership areas which needed to be amplified and the weaker areas which needed to be worked on. Mangesh was also provided with valuable tools and techniques to clear his past baggage and expand his worldview for enhanced leadership maturity.

Execute - Mangesh was given small tasks/ assignments during coaching where he could apply the learnings gained in his day-to-day work. An opportunity to share his learnings post-implementation and fine-tune his approach inspired him to take on bigger stretch goals.

Anchor - The critical aspect of cementing the new behaviour was accomplished by ensuring Mangesh took full accountability for his response to situations through a mindset shift and elevated emotional awareness. By giving him unadulterated feedback and personal coaching insights, the leadership derailers which were stalling his growth were mirrored back to him.

End Outcome

By the end of 3 months of coaching, Mangesh saw a marked improvement in his leadership style. He was complimented by his Leaders on the visible shift in his listening ability and overall Leadership maturity. Conflict Management was no longer something that depleted his power as he had learnt to pick his battles and approach the situation with renewed maturity and a broader perspective. Of course, the most significant victory for him has the deeper relationship he has cultivated with himself in being coached and becoming a highly successful leader.

Situation 2:

As an otherwise self-driven professional and a go-getter woman, Sudha felt she had  lost herself after motherhood and was buried under many expectations and family pressures. Deep down, she didn't want motherhood to dampen the lofty dreams and professional goals she had set out to conquer. She wanted specific coaching help on how she could blend her professional pursuits with her personal journey and show up as her best and most authentic self.

Her biggest enemies were not external, though. She was grappling with a lot of self-doubt and unworthiness, which showed up in multiple forms- procrastination, lack of prioritisation, constant fear, no self-care and persistent guilt of not being able to do justice to the personal and professional side. On the professional side, she needed assistance in scaling up her efficiency through better time management, crafting a strong personal brand, dealing with office politics and communication strategies for more career success.

Build - At the offset, we took time to detail her personal and professional goals irrespective of the complexity and ease of doing. It was an eye-opening moment for her to realise that these goals were not conflicting. Instead, they could be harmoniously blended by making specific tweaks in her lifestyle, working style, and mindset.

Assess - By deep questioning and inner work, Sudha finally saw that her sense of worth was linked to external validation, which had started eroding her confidence over time. The absence of 'WHY'  behind each task was the culprit behind the procrastination and lack of commitment to new Habits.

Explore - By understanding Sudha's unique situation, we built an intense morning routine by incorporating Morning SAVERS  by Hal Elrod. The START-STOP-CONTINUE-IMPROVE framework could help directly tackle the issues of Procrastination and Time Management, thereby giving her the freedom to pursue more essential tasks around self-care and renewal. The coaching sessions revealed her unique, authentic brand that needed to be showcased to the world. Through role-plays around critical conversations, Sudha was able to see how her communication style was not supporting her career goals.

Execute - Being decluttering her lifestyle through better boundary setting and reduced social media, Sudha was able to see an exponential increase in her productivity and focus, which in turn boosted her self confidence. She was assisted in categorising tasks for 'Urgency' and 'Importance' and given proven strategies to let her run her day rather than the day running her. She was also assisted with powerful NLP tools to scale up her emotional intelligence, which dramatically affected how she started showing up in the workplace and homefront.

Coaching also enabled a make-over of her brand by leveraging her existing platforms to communicate her new brand promise.

Anchor - By helping her embark on the process of journaling, Sudha was able to document her daily wins and celebrate her accomplishments. Her major challenge around procrastination and inconsistency was addressed by helping her strengthen her action and accountability muscle and recording challenges and obstacles.

End outcome

2 months into the program, Sudha was recognised as the top functional expert in her work area, an award that seemed like a distant dream a few months ago. She effectively dealt with the issues of unworthiness and self-confidence by going to the root of the problems, which helped her apply this to every other area of her life. Her new personal brand was congruent with the career goals she had set out for herself, and her communication style had finally started working for her rather than against her. On the personal side, she showed up as a more fulfilled mother and wife, precisely what she had craved for all along.
